“Scientists are uncovering evidence that short periods of fasting, if properly controlled, could achieve a number of health benefits, as well as potentially helping the overweight, as Michael Mosley discovered.“ Taken from: BBC News
I remember watching the Horizon Programme and thinking it’s taken a programme on TV to convince me of what I had been taught to believe from a very young age. I’m a Muslim and according to Muslim tradition the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) fasted twice a week every week. Fasting is meant to raise your spiritual awareness and help you focus on the more important things in life.
Eat, Fast & Live Longer gave me an insight into the scientific background I needed to take it very seriously. Michael Mosley tried out quite a few different fasting schedules on the programme but in the end settled for intermittent fasting – 2 days a week. According to the TV programme, this type of fasting helps you live longer and lose weight (if that’s what you want to do).
As one of the medical experts he interviewed put it: ‘There is nothing else you can do to your body that is as powerful as fasting.’
Both the programme and he related website do well to introduce you to the concept of fasting. I on the other hand wanted to take it one step further and actually implement it in my life. I’ve since bought the book
Since watch it on telly I’ve bought the book and actually started intermittent fasting (5:2 fast diet) in August. Since starting the fasting I have lost approx 2.5 kilos in weight and have become increasingly aware of how much I actually eat and how much I need to eat.
If you fancy giving it a go, I would suggest buying the book. I’ve included a link below to where I bought it from. I also bought the accompanying recipe book as I wanted to make it easy as possible for me to integrate it into my life. It includes a variety of recipes each with their calorific value stated making it easy for you to choose meals on your fast days.
